An obstacle in data driven / condition based maintenance management is the perception that it requires great effort to collect data. However, with the arrival of new innovations such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart sensor technology, the information is much easier to obtain.

Supported by a SMART maintenance system technicians can proactively plan and organize effective maintenance and replacements based on relevant information. Models for predictive maintenance and condition monitoring play an important role in generating the relevant data.

The next step in maintenance is the application of smart sensors and innovative solutions that report their measurements to the SMART maintenance system so maintenance is automatically planned and / or possible failure can be recognized early.

Smart maintenance systems deliver high value information not only on the components but also on the quality of the maintenance performed. KPIs concerning maintenance will, in the coming years, shift of from cost based to performance based.
